Unable to Scan into Caere Products
When referring to digital imaging hardware (scanners, photo scanners, and digital cameras), this document uses the generic term scanner. Be sure your scanner is connected, is compatible with your system, and runs with the software provided by the manufacturer before you use it with your Caere software.
Upgrading from a Previous Version
If you already have a Caere product installed on your system, you may already have Caere Scan Manager installed. Caere Scan Manager automatically determines if you have a scanner set up to work with your Caere product. If so, Caere Scan Manager is installed without altering any of your scanner settings.
Updating Previously Installed Scanners
If you are using a TWAIN scanner that had been added to a previous version of Caere Scan Manager as a generic device, your scanner settings may need to be adjusted. To ensure that you use the optimal settings, delete the icon for your device, then add that device again by selecting it from the dropdown list of manufacturers and scanners in the Add Scanner Wizard.
Using Scanners with Windows 2000
If you are running your Caere product on the Windows 2000 platform, your scanner may not work as expected. Contact your scannerÆs manufacturer to make sure that your scanner is supported under Windows 2000 and, if necessary, obtain a different scanner driver. Please refer to "Downloading Scanner Software" for a list of manufacturers and links to their Web sites. Testing of Caere products for compatibility under Windows 2000 is ongoing. For updates on Windows 2000 compatibility, please check the Caere Web site at www.caere.com.
Caere Scan Manager is the software that allows your scanner to communicate with all Caere products. Caere Scan Manager is automatically installed at the time that you install your Caere product. These Scanner Setup Notes contain information about Caere Scan Manager and the scanners that were tested and found to be compatible with the following Caere products:
Caere products are compatible with most of the scanners available. See "Supported Scanners" and "Supported Digital Cameras and Photo Scanners" to determine if your scanner has been tested with Caere products. If your scanner is not listed in Caere Scan Manager, please refer to "Scanner Not Listed in Caere Scan Manager" for information about how to make it work with your product. You can also go to CaereÆs Web site at www.caere.com/scanners for Caere Scan Manager updates as well as advice about using scanners, a scanner buyerÆs guide, and a glossary of terms.
The following list of frequently asked questions enables you to link directly to the section with the information most likely to help you.
Setting up Your Scanner with Caere Products
Caere Scan Manager is installed automatically with your Caere product. Caere Scan Manager sets up your scanner (or another input device such as a digital camera) so you can use it with Caere products. During your product installation, Caere Scan Manager prompts you to select your scanner manufacturer and model.
After installation, you can access Caere Scan Manager through the Windows control panel in order to add a scanner or change the default scanner to be used with your Caere products. You may also need to access Caere Scan Manager if you are experiencing difficulty scanning. See "Solving Scanner Problems" for more information.
Caere Scan Manager opens and displays the Add Scanner icon as well as an icon for each scanner that is currently set up with it.
Notes:
OCR results will be poor if an image is not scanned properly. Remember the following tips when you scan:
This section provides advice on solving scanner problems that you may experience when scanning with Caere products. If you experience a problem when using non-Caere products with your scanner, you should contact the manufacturer of your scanner.
Caere CorporationÆs Web site, www.caere.com, contains support sections with solutions for known issues regarding Caere products. You will also find updated scanner information and driver files. Click the Support link from Caere's home page.
Problems Connecting Your Scanner
Try these solutions if you experience a problem between your Caere products and your scanner:
Some icons and program files may remain on your system if they have been renamed, modified, or moved to different locations.
Do not run other TWAIN compliant applications while using or installing a TWAIN scanner with your Caere product.
The first time you launch your Caere product after installing or changing your current scanner in Caere Scan Manager, you may get this message: This scannerÆs configuration is set using the system-level driver. If it asks for no more information, click OK in the dialog box. You may also have the option to select the following:
Consult your scanner documentation for the correct information.
Enter the largest page size that your scanner supports.
Multiple Versions of Caere Scan Manager
If you experience a loss of connection with your scanner or if your Caere product has an intermittent problem (such as missing menu selections) and you have more than one Caere product is installed, your system may contain multiple versions of Caere Scan Manager. Check the Windows Control Panel to ensure that Caere Scan Manager 5.0 is the only Caere Scan Manager icon displayed. If you see an icon for a previous version of Caere Scan Manager, uninstall that version, reboot your system, then reinstall Caere Scan Manager 5.0.
Scanner Not Listed in Caere Scan Manager
Try these solutions if your scanner is not listed as a selectable option in Caere Scan Manager:
After adding a scanner that has not been tested by Caere, if you have difficulty scanning into your Caere product, you should use Caere Scan Troubleshooter. Caere Scan Troubleshooter provides a series of screens that asks you questions about the sorts of problems you are having, then changes the scanner settings to fix those problems.
If your scanner is on the list of scanners tested by Caere, the scanner settings have already been optimized to work with Caere products. Using Caere Scan Troubleshooter is not recommended, since changing the scanner settings of a tested scanner is unlikely to fix a problem (and may create a new problem).
Try scanning with your Caere product. Depending on the results, you may need to change the TWAIN driver or TWAIN scanner settings for your scanning device. For instructions, see "To change the current TWAIN driver" or "To change the TWAIN scanner settings."
Unable to Scan into Caere Products
You will not be able to scan documents into your Caere product in the following cases:
System Crash Occurs While Scanning
Try these solutions if a crash occurs during a scan:
Try scanning with your Caere product. If you are not satisfied with the results of your scan, you may need a different version of the TWAIN-driver software for your scanner. Contact your scanner manufacturer or visit their Web site for information on obtaining the appropriate TWAIN driver software. Please refer to "Downloading Scanner Software" for a list of scanner manufacturer Web addresses.
Many scanners are equipped with one or more scanner drivers. A scanner driver is software that allows your computer to communicate with your scanner. Caere Scan Manager supports two types of scanner driver interfaces: TWAIN and ISIS.
Scanners and other devices that are controlled by TWAIN compliant drivers let you scan material from within many Windows applications. TWAIN compliant applications can access a TWAIN compatible scanner without having to be specifically compatible. In previous versions of Caere Scan Manager, TWAIN drivers were referred to as TWAIN data sources.
ISIS is a set of software modules manufactured by Pixel Translation, which perform imaging related functions, including control of scanners.
If your scanner is supported using the ISIS interface, Caere Scan Manager installs the necessary ISIS drivers. If your scanner is supported using the TWAIN interface, you must install the TWAIN drivers supplied by the manufacturer, as listed in your scanner documentation, before installing your Caere product.
The installation of scanner software sometimes includes two TWAIN drivers. Caere recommends that, whenever possible, you select a 32-bit driver rather than a 16-bit driver. If you selected a driver that produces unacceptable scanning results, try selecting the other driver.
Before using a new scanner or new TWAIN scanner settings with your Caere product, perform a 300 dpi scan of an 8.5 x 11-inch, black-and-white page using the TWAIN software that came with your scanner. If the scan is successful, you will be able to use your Caere product with the same driver and settings.
This section lists scanners that were tested and found to work with Caere products. Some scanners require special considerations to work correctly with Caere products. To find out if your scanner has additional requirements, please refer to "Specific Scanner Information."
If your scanner is not listed here, it may have been recently tested and added to the compatibility list, located on the Caere Web site. Even if your scanner is not listed, it may still work with your Caere product. Please refer to "Scanner Not Listed in Caere Scan Manager" for information about how to set up your scanner.

Supported Digital Cameras and Photo Scanners
This section lists digital cameras that were tested and found to work with Caere products. Some of these devices require special considerations to work correctly with Caere products. To find out if your device has additional requirements, please refer to "Specific Scanner Information."
If your device is not listed here, it may have been recently tested and added to the compatibility list, located on the Caere Web site. Even if your scanner is not listed, it may still work with your Caere product. Please refer to "Scanner Not Listed in Caere Scan Manager" for information about how to set up your scanner.

The following information pertains to PageKeeper only.
During the transfer of images from the camera to PageKeeper, a message box may appear that does not have a meaningful message. Click OK. If the image is successfully transferred, disregard the message.
If you attempt to access the Scanner tab in the Options dialog box when the camera is turned off, PageKeeper may become unresponsive. When this happens, the message "PK Documents Not Responding" will appear. Close PageKeeper and restart it.
The following information describes changes you may need to make to your scanner settings in order to use your scanner with Caere products. In addition, this section documents certain scanner features that may not work as expected with your Caere products.
If you are using AgfaÆs FotoLook version 3.00.5 TWAIN driver, you may encounter a delay in scanning that prevents you from closing the scanner progress meter. If you wait approximately 20 seconds, scanning will complete. To avoid this problem, use a different version of the TWAIN driver.
The TWAIN driver included with this scanner may need to be updated. You should install the version of FotoLook 3.0x that came with your scanner, then go to the Agfa Web site. Find the information for the DuoScan T1200 Scanner, then download the patch (listed under Drivers). This will download FotoLook Version 3.00.08.
Agfa SnapScan 300 Scanner
Color images cannot be scanned using the ADF. Scan color documents using the flatbed.
When the ADF is installed on an Agfa SnapScan 600 scanner, the scanner will begin scanning and attempt to use its ADF, even if you want to use the flatbed. Attempting to scan with the ADF installed but using the flatbed will generate a No Paper in ADF error message. To scan from the flatbed, disconnect (unplug) the ADF connector and restart your Caere product.
Your Caere product will, however, operate the ADF properly if it is loaded with paper and called to scan.
Canon MultiPASS C5000 and CFX-L4500IF MFD Scanners
Canon MultiPASS scanners do not allow double-sided scanning.
(PageKeeper Users Only) If you cancel a scan in progress when using the ADF on the Canon MultiPASS Master 2.50 (with Scan Gear 4.0 TWAIN software) with the Auto Detect Pages in ADF option turned on, you will receive a Scan Failed error (operation timed out) message followed by a Scan Gear message. Canceling a scan works only when scanning at 75 or 100 dpi in black and white. With all other settings, the pages remain stacked in the scannerÆs ADF. Releasing the pages generates an error message or system GPF. As a remedy, close your Caere product and MPBackground, then restart your Caere product.
Canon 610P and 260C Scanner and Windows NT and 98
The Cancel button has no effect on scanner operation when a Canon 610P is connected to a computerÆs parallel port and the computer is running Windows 98. Once the Canon 610P or the 260C scanners begin scanning under the Windows NT operating system, control of the mouse is temporarily lost.
Canon CanoScan 300 and BJC 4300 Scanners
If legal-size documents are scanned with incorrect software settings for document size, the bottom part of the scan will be lost.
The user interface for these scanners shows a brightness control slider, but moving this slider has no effect on the brightness of the images.
ADF Options
The ADF options are not disabled (grayed out) when an Epson ADF is removed from the scanner. When no ADF is mounted, selecting ADF options will have no effect.
Windows NT Required Settings
When scanning images with Windows NT, you must enter specific settings in the Epson TWAIN dialog box that correspond to the scanning mode setting you selected in your Caere product. Otherwise, the quality of the scanned image will be poor.
The Epson TWAIN dialog box appears automatically when you set Scan Image in the Image buttonÆs drop-down list.
For a Black and White Setting:
For a Grayscale setting:
Auto Area Segmentation and Text Enhancement Technology
The following scanners support Epson Auto Area Segmentation (AAS) and Text Enhancement Technology (TET):
Action Scanner II: TET only
ES-1000C: TET only
Expressions 636: AAS and TET
GT-5500: AAS and TET
For Windows 95 and 98:
The Epson Auto Area Segmentation and Text Enhancement Technology options will only be displayed if there is a scanner connected that supports the Auto Area Segmentation and Text Enhancement Technology.
The Auto Area Segmentation and Text Enhancement Technology options appear in your Caere productÆs scanner settings along with the other scanning-mode options. Only one option can be selected at a time.
For Windows NT:
The Epson Auto Area Segmentation and Text Enhancement Technology options are only accessible through the TWAIN dialog box when scanning with Black and white.
If you are experiencing problems with repetitive scans when using the Epson GT-5500 scanner, select Show TWAIN settings before scan in Caere Scan Manager.
If you cancel a scan when using the Epson GT-5500 scanner with the Epson Scan Wizard 2.44 software, a Scanner Not Ready dialog box appears. This is followed by an Illegal Operation warning and then your Caere product stops. This occurs regardless of paper size, color, orientation, or dpi setting.
Press the Ctrl+Alt+Delete keys, end the task, press the Cancel button (in your scanner software), and then restart your Caere product. Do not cancel future scans.
When you are setting up any ISIS Fujitsu scanner, select Legal (size) pages in the Fujitsu dialog box if possible. Otherwise, select Scanner Maximum. When setting up your Caere product, you can then select any paper size that your Caere product supports.
For some Fujitsu scanners, using the ADF to scan small documents results in the image shifted to the right. To scan small documents correctly, you must use the flatbed.
Fujitsu ScanPartner 600C
The Fujitsu ScanPartner 600 scanner does not prompt you to turn pages over when doing duplex (double-sided) scanning. Note when one side is finished scanning, then turn the stack over.
Fujitsu 10C and 600C
If you cannot scan color images, uninstall the ScandAll software. Then reinstall Caere Scan Manager.
(PageKeeper Users Only) PageKeeper's Auto-detect pages in ADF feature does not work for the first sheet of paper you place in the ADF of HP OfficeJet scanners. To resolve this problem, turn on Auto-detect pages in ADF (in PageKeeper options), load the ADF, and start the scan manually. It will automatically detect pages thereafter.
HP Printer Scanner Copier 300
The HP Printer Scanner Copier 300 will not scan a black and white image at 75 or 100 dpi. Scanning at these resolutions results in an HP error message, and disrupts the connection with the scanner. To resume scanning, turn the scannerÆs power off and then on.
HP ScanJet IIcx Scanner
The HP ScanJet IIcx scanner may lose communication with your Caere product and require you to restart your computer when scanning black and white, landscape, or A4 size pages.
HP OfficeJet Pro Scanners
The HP OfficeJet Pro 1150c, 1170c, and 1175c do not support legal-size pages.
HP DeskScan User Interface Software
Once scanning begins while using HP DeskScan software, do not change software settings or minimize windows. If settings are changed or windows altered, a scanner error may occur.
(PageKeeper Users Only) Changing the settings and window-size may cause scanned documents to display as grayscale images. If this occurs, turn off Auto-Detect Pages in ADF, select page regions, and set the appropriate image type.
HP ScanJet Source Software
HP ScanJet Source, provided with a Windows 98 CD-ROM, is a data source that provides three different scan modes: 75 color, 150 gray, and 300 dpi line art. If you choose the HP ScanJet Source that Microsoft ships, Caere recommends that you select BW Drawing.
The selections BW Photo and Color Photo do not provide sufficient resolution to work with Caere products.
HP Precision Scan User Interface Software
(PageKeeper Users Only) Under some conditions, HP Precision Scan 1.0 or 1.01 software will cause scanned documents to display as grayscale images. If this occurs, turn off Auto-Detect Pages in ADF, select page regions, and set the appropriate image type.
HP ScanJet 4100C and 5100C Scanners
Performing OCR on color documents can require large amounts of time. Perform OCR using grayscale or black and white settings.
OmniPage Pro will display all images from the ScanJet 4100C in black-and-white, even if color is selected.
HP 5200C Scanner
When scanning photos or documents smaller than letter size, place a sheet of white paper on top of the photo or document to avoid picking up an image of the scanner cover.
Microtek Scanners and Software
If you are receiving Cannot find scanner error messages or undergoing SCSI checks frequently, the ROM on your SCSI card may need updated software or your SCSI chain may need termination. Visit the Microtek Web site, www.microtek.com, and check the PC FTP site for updated software.
Microtek ScanMaker E3
On the Microtek ScanMaker E3 the software brightness control for both grayscale and color produces a reversed effect. To lighten an image, slide the control toward Darken, and to darken an image, slide the control to Lighten.
Microtek ScanMaker 4
The Microtek Scan Maker 4 cannot scan 75 dpi. Attempting to scan at 75 dpi will cause the system to fail. If a failure occurs, restart the application and make sure 75 dpi has not been selected.
If your Mustek scanner stops during scanning and you are unable to use the Cancel button, the driver software you are using may be outdated. Additionally, to operate properly, Mustek SCSI scanners must be connected to their Mustek provided SCSI cards. Make sure you have installed any software patches that came with your scanner. If you still have trouble scanning, download and install all of the latest upgrade and patch software from the Mustek Web site at www.mustek.com.
If you experience memory errors after installing any appropriate patches, you might have to remove the Mustek Watch program from the Windows Startup group.
Once you start scanning from your Mustek scanner to your Caere product, you should not cancel the scan. If you cancel in the middle of a scan, you will receive an error message and you will need to restart your Caere product.
Mustek 1200 SP Pro Scanner
If you have set your source in Caere Scan Manager to be the Mustek Paragon 1200 SP Pro and are scanning black-and-white pages, altering the page-size setting using the Mustek software interface will not be effective. Select the paper size that you are going to scan within your Caere product.
In Storm SmartPage ProÆs software (EasyPhoto 2.6), the only option available is 8-bit grayscale scanning in portrait mode. If you try scanning with the scanner software user interface turned off, Caere products will fail.
UMAX Vista-S6E and Vista-S12 Scanners
For the UMAX Vista-S6E or Vista-S12 scanners, make sure that the ADF contains paper before you launch your Caere product. If the ADF is empty, the ADF software options are unavailable (grayed out).
When reopened, the UMAX TWAIN interface defaults to 100 dpi for color and grayscale. Settings are not saved after each session. Therefore, each time you scan, make sure that the UMAX TWAIN interface is set for 200 dpi or higher for your Caere product to accept the page. A 300 dpi black-and- white setting is recommended. Otherwise, you will receive an Incorrect TWAIN settings message and scanning will stop.
Caere recommends the following when using the UMAX Astra 300P scanner:
Visioneer Scanners with PaperPort
Some scanners save their scanned data to disk, and you must transfer it to your Caere product. After you can scan pages, drag the page images onto the Caere product icon on your PaperPort desktop. The page images are loaded into your Caere product.
In some cases when you install OmniPage Pro, it automatically becomes the OCR engine used with Visioneer PaperPort software. This means that OmniPage Pro OCR is used to convert images to text when you drag them onto text-based application links in PaperPort. However, with some versions of PaperPort, you may have to manually change the OCR engine to OmniPage Pro.
To make sure OmniPage Pro OCR is used with text-application links in PaperPort:
Visioneer 3100USB and 6100USB Scanners
If you are using OmniPage Web, you will not be able to scan multiple pages in color with Visioneer 3100SB or 6100USB scanners. Black-and-white scanning works correctly for these scanners in OmniPage Web.
You may need a different software driver if you experience compatibility problems between your scanner and your Caere product. Compatibility problems may be indicated if your scanner does not work with your Caere product even after trying the suggestions in "Solving Scanner Problems."
